[Player ratings] Arsenal 2-2 Southampton: Lacazette stars but Emery has to go
Unai Emery’s future hangs by a thread after Arsenal needed a last gasp equaliser to draw 2-2 at home to lowly Southampton this afternoon.
It was another dreadful start by Arsenal as Southampton took the lead in the 8th minute. We totally fell asleep at the back as the visitors took a quick free-kick and Danny Ings raced through to score at Bernd Leno’s near post for 0-1.
It wasn’t long before Arsenal drew level as Alexandre Lacazette was on hand to make it 1-1 after the Frenchman fired home a loose ball inside the box in the 18th minute.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should have put Arsenal ahead but saw his effort well saved and we had a strong shout for penalty after a handball in the area but it was Southampton who got the next goal thanks to a total gift from the referee.
Kieran Tierney was adjudged to have fouled Ings with the slightest of touches in the box. The Saints striker went down like a truck had hit him but the ref bought it. Bernd Leno saved James Ward-Prowses penalty but only palmed straight back into the danger zone and the midfielder tapped home for 1-2 in the 71st minute.
It looked like we were heading for an embarrassing defeat but Lacazette salvaged a point in the 96th minute when he poked home the equaliser at the far post to make it 2-2.
Here are my ratings for the game:
Leno 6/10 | Beaten at his near post for the opener. Saved the penalty but palmed it back into the danger zone. Should really have pushed it away from goal. Made a couple of solid saves.
Chambers 5/10 | Struggled to cope with Bertrand and Redmond at times in the first half. Subbed at half-time.
Luiz 5/10 | Completely switched off to allow Ings a free run at goal for the opener. He had his back to the play and a player of his experience should know better.
Sokratis 5/10 | Got away with a huge error when he lost possession in the six yard box at 1-1. Looked shaky all afternoon.
Bellerin 5/10 | Still looks a little rusty. Didn’t get forward as much as we’re used to. Passing was pretty poor too. Subbed.
Guendouzi 6/10 | Didn’t take the game by the scruff of the neck and his passing was way off today.
Torreira 6.5/10 | Decent game from the Uruguayan. Worked hard and put himself about.
Tierney 5/10 | A poor game by his standards. His touch was off at times and crossing wasn’t up to scratch. Unlucky with the penalty.
Ozil 6/10 | A few nice touches and combinations but wasn’t able to have a huge influence on the game.
Lacazette 7.5/10 | Nice finish to make it 1-1 and grabbed a late equaliser. Worked hard all afternoon. Let’s hope his late goal doesn’t save Emery his job.
Aubameyang 5/10 | Worked off scraps for most of the game. Looked a yard off the pace today when he was involved.
Subs:
Pepe 5/10 | Showed a lack of confidence when he attempted [and failed] to find Ozil when put through on goal. Should have gone it alone. Hit the bar shortly after with a volley.
Willock N/A | On too late
Martinelli N/A | On too late
Manager
Emery 1/10 | This HAS to be the end of Emery. It was another inept performance and although Southampton were fortunate with the penalty, they more than created enough chances to win the game today. The Saints, who sat second from bottom at the start of the day, had 21 shots to Arsenal’s 12 at the Emirates. It was a disgraceful performance and this isn’t a one off. It’s become the norm and the board need to do the right thing and pull the trigger now.
