Arsenal are a good outside bet to win the FA Cup this season
The Arsenal players are back training at London Colney as English football prepares to return next month and supporters are desperate to see their idols back in action after such a prolonged absence.
All the focus is on completing the Premier League season as failure to do so would have catastrophic financial consequences for many top flight clubs. However, Arsenal have very little left to play for in the league as we currently sit ninth in the table and eight points off fourth-placed Chelsea.
Even a monumental run of form over the remaining nine Premier League games is unlikely to see Arsenal snatch a top four place ahead of the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United so we’re set to miss out on Champions League qualification once again.
With the club already out of the Europa League following a shock loss to Olympiacos, Mikel Arteta would be forgiven for focusing his efforts on winning the FA Cup and Arsenal could just be the dark horses to lift the trophy this season.
Arsenal have already had to navigate some tricky games having seen-off Leeds United, Bournemouth and Portsmouth and we’ve been drawn to face high-flying Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in the quarter-finals. It promises to be a tough game as the Blades have been outstanding this season following their promotion and they sit two places above Arsenal in the table.
However, if we could edge past Sheffield United then anything can happen in the last four of the competition. Obviously it’s difficult to make a draw prediction but Arsenal would be confident against almost anybody in the semi-finals. Perhaps only Manchester City would be classed as heavy favourites. The defending champions should make light work of Newcastle United in their quarter-final tie so Arteta will be hoping to avoid his former club if we make it to the semi’s.
Just like Arsenal, Man Utd have been plagued by inconsistent form this season so it would be an intriguing game in the last four if United make it past Norwich City. I would also see it as a fairly even contest if Arsenal faced the winners of Chelsea and Leicester City so with the exception of Man City, this FA Cup is wide open.
City are the 8/11 favourites with the bookmakers followed by Chelsea (7/1) and Man Utd (8/1). Arsenal are priced as the 9/1 fourth favourites and I think those odds make us a tempting proposition given our huge experience in the FA Cup. Let’s not forget we’ve won the trophy a record 13 times – including three times in the last six years – so I think Arsenal are a solid bet to lift the cup once again this season.
