[Ratings & Goals] Wolves 0-2 Arsenal: Saka scores stunner as Aubameyang digs deep
Arsenal produced an old-school performance to come away with a vital 2-0 victory over Wovles at Molineux this evening.
It was a cagey first half with neither side giving much away but Arsenal managed to break the deadlock just before the break. Kieran Tierney teed-up Bukayo Saka and the youngster found the back of the net with a wonderful volley to make it 1-0 to Arsenal.
Wolves were on top for much of the second period but it was Arsenal who scored again as Joe Willock set-up Alexandre Lacazette and the Frenchman did superbly well to find the far corner for 2-0 in the 86th minute.
Arsenal held out to secure a huge victory that boosts our hopes of making a late push for a European place.
Here are my ratings:
Martinez 7/10 | Brave early save to deny Traore proved crucial. Claimed numerous crosses and was a real presence.
Mustafi 7/10 | Another solid performance from the improving German. Didn’t put a foot wrong and was sensible with his passing out from the back.
Luiz 7/10 | Struggled against the pace of Traore when he was dragged out wide but was otherwise solid. Dominant in the air too.
Kolasinac 6/10 | Not his worst display but was given a tough time by Traore and didn’t look comfortable in the back three.
Soares 6/10 | Not on the same wave length as Saka down the right and passing was sloppy at times. But worked hard to get up and down the flank.
Ceballos 6.5/10 | I thought he was a little too ‘safe’ with his passing as we struggled to make things happen when Wolves were on top. Worked hard though.
Xhaka 6.5/10 | Another steady performance. Didn’t dictate the game like he normally does, especially in the second half, but led by example to organise the team in a disciplined display.
Tierney 7/10 | Set-up Saka for the opening goal and was having a good game until he was subbed. Traore did give him a bit of trouble but maybe Arteta was protecting him as he’s played a lot of minutes recently.
Saka 7/10 | Struggled early on in another new role on the right side of the front three. However, opened the scoring with a superb volley – which was his first Premier League goal. A mature performance again from the youngster.
Nketiah 6/10 | Almost broke the deadlock when he hit the post but that was his only real sight of goal. A little isolated at times but worked hard to keep the Wolves defence on their toes.
Aubameyang 7.5/10 | Played his part in the opening goal and set-up Willock late on for what should have been Arsenal’s third. Didn’t have any real chances himself but worked his socks off for the team.
Subs:
Maitland-Niles 7/10 | Terrific display after replacing Tierney at left-back. Nullified the threat of Traore.
Lacazette 7/10 | Scored a superb goal to make it 2-0 and kill the game. Great impact.
Willock 6/10 | Set-up Lacazette for our second and had a shot cleared off the line minutes later.
Torreira 6/10 | A busy late cameo. Looked sharp.
Bellerin 5/10 | Nothing really of note.
