Agent confirms Arsenal approach and says 24y/o is ready to force move to Emirates
According to SPORT, the agent of David Raya has confirmed an approach from Arsenal and says the Brentford goalkeeper is ready to hand in a transfer request to force a move to the Emirates.
Arsenal are in the market for a new keeper as it looks like Emi Martinez is set to leave the club. The Guardian report tonight that he’s been left out of our squad for tomorrow’s trip to Fulham with Brighton and Aston Villa battling it out over a potential £20m deal.
Losing Martinez would leave a hole needing to be filled and Raya has emerged as a prime target in recent weeks with The Athletic reporting that Arsenal are keen on luring him away from Griffin Park this summer.
Brentford have so far refused to even negotiate as they are reluctant to lose their number one after he played a starring role in their march to the play-off final last season where they missed out on promotion to the Premier League with a 2-1 defeat to Fulham.
However, SPORT claims they’ve spoken to Raya’s agent Jaume Monell and he’s not only confirmed Arsenal’s approach to sign the 24-year-old but he suggests Raya is ready to hand in a transfer request in order to force a move to north London.
Monell is quoted by SPORT as saying they ‘will do what is necessary’ to secure a move to Arsenal as his client wants to play in the top flight and Arteta is ready to hand the keeper a long-term contract if a deal can be agreed between the two clubs.
Raya was excellent for Brentford last season after keeping 16 clean sheets in the Championship so he has the potential to be a top goalkeeper, however, I hope Arsenal don’t spend too much money on him.
If we can get around £20m for Martinez then it would be madness to spend even £10m on a number two goalkeeper when Arteta is desperately trying to raise money to sign a top class midfielder like Thomas Partey or Houssem Aouar.
If we can get Raya for a low fee of around £6m [highly unlikely] then maybe it’s worth it but I’d personally prefer to see us sign an older, experienced No.2 on a cheap one-year deal and use the Martinez money to strengthen the first team.
