[Ratings Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal: Tierney struggled as Lacazette blew his big chance
Arsenal slumped to yet another disappointing defeat at Anfield as Liverpool ran out 3-1 victors on Monday night.
The Premier League champions dominated the early stages but it was Arsenal who took a shock lead as Alexandre Lacazette scuffed home from close range following an error from Andy Robertson.
However, we committed the ultimate sin as we let Liverpool equalise within just three minutes as Sadio Mane was on hand to poke home to make it 1-1 in the 28th minute after Bernd Leno had parried a Mo Salah shot.
Liverpool then quickly took the lead as Robertson made up for his earlier mistake by making it 2-1 in the 34th minute following a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross.
Arsenal improved after the break and had a glorious chance to equalise but Lacazette missed a one-v-one with Alisson after being put clear by Dani Ceballos. Any chance of a late equaliser was snuffed out when Diogo Joto made it 3-1 to Liverpool – although it should probably have been ruled out for handball.
Here are my ratings:
Leno 6/10 | Great reaction save to deny Mane from close range early on but should have done better for the equaliser. Could also have commanded his box better at times.
Holding 5/10 | Very poor distribution at times but playing out from the back isn’t his game. Much better in the air and made a couple of decent tackles. Found it tough against Mane though.
Luiz 6/10 | Played a few nice long passes and did his bit to hold the back three together. Wasn’t enough though.
Tierney 5/10 | Disappointing. Should have done better to stop Salah setting up Mane for the equaliser and was given the round around by the Egyptian and Alexander-Arnold a few times. Didn’t look fully fit to me after his recent knock.
Bellerin 5/10 | A poor display. Sloppy ball led to the second goal and couldn’t get near Mane at times.
Elneny 5/10 | Shouldn’t have started. Offered very little as Liverpool dominated the midfield and couldn’t get near them.
Xhaka 5/10 | Looked totally lost at times against the Liverpool midfield. Just couldn’t get hold of the game at all.
Maitland-Niles 5/10 | Played his part in the goal but was otherwise very poor. Passing was shocking at times and couldn’t get near Salah.
Willian 5/10 | Struggled to get in the game and offer anything of note going forward. Worked hard but just wasn’t his night.
Lacazette 5/10 | Fortunate to open the scoring with a scuffed shot and missed a glorious chance to make it 2-2 when clean through. Huge miss. Also missed another one-one-one chance minutes earlier but was offside.
Aubameyang 5/10 | Had very little in terms of service but this was still a very disappointing display from the skipper. Did his bit defensively but lacked a cutting edge when he was on the front foot.
Subs:
Ceballos 6/10 | Made a real difference after replacing Xhaka. Played a lovely ball to release Laca for what should have been the equaliser.
Pepe 5/10 | Two awful corners summed up his outing.
Nketiah 5/10 | No real impact.
