Arsenal in talks with agent over deal to sign £27m Serie A star
According to reports via The Sun, Arsenal are in talks with the agent of Amadou Diawara over a potential deal to sign the £27m-rated AS Roma midfielder this summer.
Mikel Arteta is keen to revamp his midfield before the window closes next week but Arsenal have so far been unable to agree deals Atletico Madrid or Lyon for prime targets Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar.
With time running out, it looks like the club are exploring other options and The Sun cites a report from the newspaper version of Il Messaggero that claims Arsenal have opened talks with Diawara’s agent Daniele Piraino.
The Italian paper says Tottenham have also enquired about the 23-year-old so Arsenal could face competition but it looks like Diawara may be on the move after being left angry by Roma’s failure to register him for their opening game of the season.
The Guinea international started during the 0-0 draw at Verona but a mix up over his age meant Roma didn’t register him properly and Verona were subsequently awarded a 3-0 victory.
Diaward was then benched for Roma’s 2-2 draw with Juventus last weekend and the midfielder’s agent has now confirmed they want his future resolved after expressing their frustration at the whole situation.
Piraino is quoted by The Sun as telling Tuttomercatoweb:
“It was a real displeasure for Amadou that the club forgot to list him in the squad [at Verona].
“The fact it’s been made out to be the ‘Diawara Incident’ is a shame, because he certainly didn’t appreciate that and the responsibility isn’t his own.”
“He was happy with how his teammates played, but he was counting on playing from the beginning, above all because of what he does for the team and what he deserves.”
“There’s just one week left in the transfer window. If the forgetfulness over listing the player in the squad sums up the club’s true choices, we have to bring this up with the club.
“We want clarity on Amadou’s true role and importance within the club’s project.”
It sounds like Diawara could be using this incident as an excuse to push for a move and it appears Arsenal may be interested in offering him a fresh start here in the Premier League.
The Sun says Diawara is valued at around £27m which would make him a much cheaper alternative to Partey or Aouar – who’re both being valued at around £45m by their clubs.
Diawara is a specialist defensive midfielder so he could be the man to offer some much-needed protection in front of the Arsenal defence but I still think we’ll do all we can to land Partey and/or Aouar before making any formal move for the Roma man.
