Arsenal targeting late swoop so sign 28-year-old international – Sky Sports
According to Sky Sports News, Arsenal are targeting a deadline day swoop to sign Chelsea midfielder Jorginho after missing out on Houssem Aouar and Thomas Partey.
Mikel Arteta was been trying to overhaul his midfield all summer but we’ve struggled to agree deals for our main targets. Our £32m offer for Aouar has been rejected by Lyon and Sky Sports suggest that any potential deal for the Frenchman has now collapsed.
The situation with Partey hasn’t changed in weeks as Atletico Madrid insist his £45m release clause needs to be paid in full – which is something Arsenal are struggling to afford having failed to generate serious offers for Matteo Guendouzi.
Lucas Torreira is set to join Atletico on loan but that won’t provide us with the money we need to pay Partey’s release clause so Arsenal are now scrambling around trying to find a cheaper alternative.
Jorginho’s name emerged last week and Sky Sports claim Arsenal are now trying to get a deal agreed with Chelsea to sign the Italian international on a season long loan deal before the window closes.
ESPN are also running a similar report and they suggest that Chelsea may be willing to let the 28-year-old leave as Frank Lampard needs to trim his squad after bringing in seven new signings this summer.
The big issue is whether they want to strengthen a rival and we should remember what Chelsea did to us a few years ago when they strung out a proposed loan move for Demba Ba until the final hours of the window only to pull out at the last minute.
Jorginho has been an important part of Lampard’s side as he’s started in three of Chelsea’s four league games so far this season – scoring three goals – so I struggle to see them allowing him to join Arsenal unless a replacement is found.
Chelsea have been strongly linked with Declan Rice this summer so perhaps if they can get a deal agreed with West Ham, the Blues will sanction Jorginho’s loan to Arsenal.
Arteta said after today’s win over Sheffield United that he’s ‘confident’ we’ll get the business he wants to do done before the window closes on Monday night but time is running out to get deals agreed.
I think it’s clear we need to strengthen in midfield as we need a powerful presence and some creativity in the middle of the park but I’m not convinced Jorginho is the answer to either problem.
Aouar and Partey would have been excellent additions and it will be a big disappointment if we have to settle for Jorginho. Let’s hope the bosses have something up their sleeve for deadline day…
