Team news update: Arsenal attacker an injury doubt, 4 players could miss Villa clash
Arsenal will get back to Premier League action when we welcome Aston Villa to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening.
Mikel Arteta rotated his squad for Thursday’s Europa League win over Molde so we should see plenty of key players recalled this weekend. The likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Hector Bellerin, Kieran Tierney, Thomas Partey and Gabriel will all be fresh to start.
However, one player who could miss the visit of Villa on Sunday is Reiss Nelson after he was ruled out of Arsenal’s win over Molde having picked up a knee injury in training ahead of the Europa League clash. Nelson would have started the match if fit but was left out as a precaution and is now a doubt for the Aston Villa game this weekend.
David Luiz made a successful return to action after completing the full ninety minutes against Molde having made a swift recovery from a thigh issue so the Brazilian defender will be in contention to keep his place on Sunday.
Arsenal didn’t suffer any fresh injury concerns last night so Arteta will have a strong squad to choose from, however, he’ll still be without three long-term injury absentees in Calum Chambers, Pablo Mari and Gabriel Martinelli.
Chambers has been in full training at London Colney recently after recovering from knee surgery but the centre-back is still lacking match fitness so isn’t expected to be available to face Villa on Sunday.
Mari is due to resume full training later this month as he steps-up his recovery from an ankle ligament injury that he sustained earlier this year but the Spaniard is still unavailable this weekend.
Martinelli has been spotted taking part in some group work at the training ground this week as he increases his work-load following a serious knee injury. However, Arsenal aren’t going to rush him back so Martinelli isn’t due to resume full training until next month.
So the squad is in good shape as we prepare to welcome Aston Villa to north London with Arsenal looking to make it four consecutive victories in all competitions ahead of the international break.
