[Player ratings] Arsenal 0-3 Villa: Willian & Lacazette woeful for toothless Gunners
Arsenal produced our worst performance of the season to crash 3-0 to Aston Villa at the Emirates on Sunday night.
It was another poor start from Arsenal as we conceded inside the opening minute when John McGinn fired past Bernd Leno. Fortunately the goal was ruled out as an offside Ross Barkley impeded Leno’s view.
However, Villa continued to look dangerous and eventually took the lead when Bukayo Saka put through his own net at the far post in the 25th minute to make it 1-0 to the visitors.
We missed a couple of good chances to equalise with Alexandre Lacazette and Rob Holding the culprits and we were made to pay as Villa doubled their lead in the 72nd minute when Ollie Watkins headed home.
The visitors almost made it 3-0 a minute later when Dani Ceballos cleared a Jack Grealish shot off the line but they didn’t have to wait long to get their third goal as Watkins fired home to make it 3-0 in the 75th minute.
Arsenal had no response and we slumped to our fourth league defeat in eight games. It was arguably our worst performance under Arteta and serious questions need to be asked over the international break.
Here are my ratings:
Leno 6/10 | Good save to deny Trezeguet early in the second half and to be fair he wasn’t particularly at fault for any of the goals. Just had a woeful team in front of him tonight.
Holding 5/10 | Missed a good chance to equalise and was given a torrid time by Grealish and Watkins. Disappointing after his solid show at United last week.
Gabriel 6/10 | Not at his best but was let down by those around him more than being individually at fault. Battled reasonably well.
Tierney 6/10 | Superb cross should have led to Lacazette making it 1-1 and made a couple of good blocks. Struggled at times defensively though.
Bellerin 5/10 | Offered little going forward and couldn’t get near Grealish at times. Poor.
Partey 6/10 | A few decent moments in the first half but was forced off at half-time with a thigh issue.
Elneny 5/10 | Allowed Villa to rip through us on numerous occasions. Offered very little protection to the back four.
Saka 5/10 | Scored an own goal to give Villa the lead. Perhaps a little unlucky but he was a yard behind where he should have been to defend the cross. Frustrated going forward too.
Willian 4/10 | Once again, a hugely disappointing display. No threat at all going forward, set pieces were average at best, lost possession for the opening goal and fluffed two decent chances to hit the target.
Lacazette 4/10 | Missed a great chance to make it 1-1 in the first half when he headed over and it was a crucial miss. Very poor overall.
Aubameyang 4/10 | Another worryingly poor performance as he had absolutely no impact at all. Just isn’t getting into games or into goal-scoring positions anymore. Something needs to change to get more out of Auba.
Subs:
Ceballos 5/10 | Good clearance to stop Grealish scoring.
Pepe 5/10 | Curled a shot wide but still couldn’t add the creative spark we desperately needed.
Nketiah 5/10 | Didn’t really get in the game or do anything of note.
