Arsenal team news update: Duo could miss FA Cup clash with Southampton
Arsenal continue the defence of their FA Cup when we travel to St Mary’s Stadium to take on Southampton in the fourth round on Saturday afternoon.
Ahead of the game, the club have issued a team news update on Arsenal.com today and provided the latest news on the fitness of midfielder Dani Ceballos and centre-back Pablo Mari.
Ceballos missed Arsenal’s Premier League win over Newcastle United on Monday night after picking up a minor calf issue ahead of the game at the Emirates Stadium. The Spaniard is still being assessed by the clubs medical team and will require a late fitness test before his availability for the trip to Southampton can be determined.
Mari has missed Arsenal’s last three games in all competitions due to a calf strain and the defender has once again been ruled out of the FA Cup clash this weekend. However, Mari is aiming to resume training next week so shouldn’t be on the sidelines for much longer.
The team news update on the official website said:
Dani Ceballos
Left calf. Missed Monday’s match against Newcastle United as a precaution with tight calf. Dani will continue to be assessed in the coming days and will be tested ahead of Saturday’s match.Pablo Mari
Right calf. Pablo is progressing well from a mild calf strain. Aiming to be back in training next week
If Ceballos is ruled out of the trip to Southampton then I’d expect Granit Xhaka to continue alongside Thomas Partey on Saturday – although Mohamed Elneny is pushing for a recall if Arteta decides to freshen things up.
The boss has a strong squad at his disposal as he doesn’t have any other injury concerns so Arsenal may rotate this weekend with the likes of Hector Bellerin, Gabriel, Willian, Nicolas Pepe, Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah also hoping for recalls to the starting eleven.
