[Photos] Arsenal stars rage on Instagram at costly David Luiz dismissal
Gabriel and David Luiz have both reacted on Instagram after the latter was sent off in controversial fashion during Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat at Wolves last night.
Arsenal started superbly at Molineux and played arguably our best football of the season during the opening 45 minutes. Bukayo Saka smacked the post, had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside and Nicolas Pepe also clipped the bar before he curled home midway through the first half to give us the lead we deserved.
We were well on top and should have put the game to bed before the match turned on it’s head. With just seconds remaining before half-time, Wolves caught us exposed at the back and Willian Jose was sent through on goal. A retreating Luiz ran across the back of the forward and Willian Jose tumbled to the ground.
Replays showed minimal contact [if any at all] and it was certainly unintentional but the referee pointed to the spot and swiftly gave Luiz his marching orders with a straight red card. VAR took a few seconds to decide it was the right decision and referee Craig Pawson wasn’t even called to review such an important moment on the pitchside monitor.
Ruben Neves scored from the spot to level things up, Joao Moutinho then made it 2-1 to Wolves with a stunner just after the break and any hopes of an Arsenal comeback were gone when we were reduced to 9-men after Bernd Leno was dismissed for handling the ball outside the area.
The game completely turned on it’s head following the contentious penalty incident and it’s not only Arsenal fans who’ve been left raging at the decision. Gabriel has taken to his Instagram Stories to upload a photo of the Luiz incident and vent his anger at his team-mate being sent off for such an innocuous challenge.
Luiz also took to Instagram to express his frustration as his sending off after uploading a simple ‘Unbelievable’ to his stories late last night. I doubt his manager will disagree with his social media content as Mikel Arteta was clearly fuming in his interview after the game.
You can see both photos below but it’s understandable why Gabriel, Luiz and Arteta [plus most Arsenal fans] are raging at last night’s game. We were playing superbly, deserved to be winning and three vital points have been taken from us due to another contentious decision from the ref and VAR.
The rules are so ridiculous these days that apparently Luiz would have been better off hacking down Willian Jose in an attempt to win the ball, as that would only have resulted in a yellow card. An accidental collision like last night’s is deemed a straight red card. It’s ludicrous.
Or that’s the interpretation of the laws anyway. As even former referees don’t seem to know what the rules are. Mark Clattenburg said in the Daily Mail that the officials got it wrong as there is scope in the laws for an accidental collision to be a yellow card. But Mark Halsey told The Sun it was the correct decision and we can’t have any complaints as Luiz didn’t make any attempt to play the ball.
So god knows what the rules are, all I know is it was extremely harsh and Arsenal didn’t deserve to lose the game last night because of it.
