Report: Arsenal table bids worth £74m as Gunners close-in on triple swoop
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal have tabled offers worth £74m for Ben White, Albert Lokonga and Nuno Tavares as we close-in on a triple swoop.
Mikel Arteta is looking to revamp his squad this summer after a hugely disappointing season and it appears the Gunners boss is on the verge of sealing deals for three of his transfer targets.
A new left-back to support Kieran Tierney is on the agenda and Tavares has emerged as a serious candidate this week with reports claiming Arsenal are in advanced talks with Benfica to sign the youngster.
The Daily Mail says we’ve now tabled an offer worth around £6m for Tavares and are locked in talks with Benfica trying to get the deal over the line to bring the Portuguese under-21 international to the Emirates Stadium.
The newspaper suggests that there is still work to be done but Fabrizio Romano claims an agreement has now been found and the 21-year-old has agreed personal terms over a five-year contract.
It appears Arsenal are also closing-in on a deal for Lokonga as the Daily Mail claims we’ve submitted an improved offer worth £18m including add-ons after previously seeing our opening £13.5m bid rejected.
Lokonga close
The report says Anderlecht want £18m so it appears Arsenal’s latest offer matches that valuation while Romano once again says personal terms have already been agreed with Lokonga’s camp, which means this deal could be wrapped-up swiftly.
The 22-year-old is one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in Belgian football so he should prove to be an exciting long-term signing – although I have my doubts as to whether he’s ready to be a regular at Arsenal just yet.
We’ve also looking to bring in a right-sided centre-back and White has been widely touted as Arteta’s main target with the Daily Mail saying Arsenal have offered to pay Brighton £45m plus another £5m in add-ons.
White an upgrade?
The Seagulls are wanting the full £50m guaranteed but there isn’t much between our valuations so this deal is expected to be agreed eventually with personal terms not thought to be an issue.
White is currently away with the England squad at Euro 2020 so any move to Arsenal will probably be completed after their participation in the tournament comes to an end.
The 23-year-old is one of the best young defenders in British football so he should be an excellent signing for Arsenal. I do think £50m is steep but he’s English so you always have to pay a premium.
These three proposed deals will cost Arsenal at least £74m and it’s good to see we’ve gone for young talent who have the potential to improve further and increase in value.
My big concern is we’re not really improving the first team that much for our £74m investment. Tavares and Lokonga are players for the future and although White is a great talent, I’m not convinced he’s that much better than what we already have. Certainly not £50m better, anyway.
