Reports: Arsenal make approach to sign exciting La Liga star
According to reports in Spain via the Mirror, Arsenal have made an approach to sign Sergino Dest from Barcelona but face stiff competition from Bayern Munich and Juventus for the £26m defender.
Mikel Arteta is working hard revamping the squad this summer and we’ve already signed left-back Nuno Tavares from Benfica while midfielder Albert Lokonga completed his move from Anderlecht today.
However, the boss is expected to bring in several additional signings and a right-back is on the agenda as Hector Bellerin is being strongly linked with a move to Serie A champions Inter Milan.
Bellerin’s exit would leave a hole needing to be filled and it appears Dest has emerged as a target as the Mirror is citing a report from Sport that claims Arsenal have now made an approach to try and land the youngster from Barcelona.
Dest is one of the most exciting full-backs in Europe and enjoyed an excellent start to life at the Nou Camp having only joined Barca from Ajax last summer, so I think he’d be a terrific signing.
The 20-year-old is valuated at around £26m [€30m], according to Sport, so he’d be within Arsenal’s budget and Barcelona may be forced to cash-in as they’re in serious financial difficulty. The Catalans can’t register any players, including Lionel Messi, until they slash their wage bill so they may be open to selling Dest if a suitable offer arrives.
Move unlikely
The problem is, the United States international wants to stay at Barca and we’d no doubt face a tough battle to convince him to join Arsenal as we have no European football to offer him.
Not only that, but the Spanish publication says Bayern Munich and Juventus have also expressed an interest in signing Dest so Arsenal would face an uphill fight beating those two to his signature if he did leave the Nou Camp.
We’ll have to see how things progress but as much as I’d love to see Dest join Arsenal, I won’t be getting too excited as this move is highly unlikely to happen.
