Player in London to undergo medical & sign 5-year deal after Arsenal agree £34m fee

By on August 18, 2021

There have been some big updates on Martin Odegaard today with reports claiming he’s in London to undergo his medical after Arsenal agreed a £34m fee with Real Madrid.

Mikel Arteta has been in the market for a creative midfielder all summer after Odegaard headed back to Madrid following a successful six-month spell at the Emirates Stadium on loan last season.

Arsenal have always been keen to re-sign Odegaard but it initially looked as though he was set to remain at the Bernabeu as he wanted to prove himself to new boss Carlo Ancelotti. That led to Arsenal looking at alternatives with James Maddison and Houssem Aouar heavily linked.

However, things changed last week as Odegaard was left out of the Madrid squad for their opening game of the new season. He wasn’t given a shirt number and wasn’t even registered as Madrid player with the Spanish FA for the upcoming campaign.

The Norwegian international now knew he wasn’t part of Ancelotti’s plans so Arsenal stepped-up their interest. Widespread reports on Tuesday night claimed that a deal was close after the two clubs entered advanced negotiations.

Arsenal were keen to get things wrapped-up quickly as we want to try and get the 22-year-old registered in time to feature against Chelsea and it looks as though we are on track to do just that.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have now agreed a deal with Madrid worth around £34m [€40m] to sign Odegaard on a permanent basis with the playmaker agreeing terms over a five-year contract at the Emirates.

He tweeted:

Martin Ødegaard to Arsenal, here we go and deal confirmed! Permanent move – bit less than €40m to Real Madrid. Personal terms already agreed on five years contract. 🇳🇴 #AFC

Edu and Arteta wanted Ødegaard as only priority since June, strategy was correct… and now, done deal.

Odegaard in London

Norwegian based journalist Arilas Ould-Saada has confirmed the move is now a ‘done deal’ and claims that Odegaard is already in London to undergo his medical.

So as long as there are no last minute complications, Odegaard is set to re-join Arsenal and become our fourth major signing of the summer following Ben White, Nuno Tavares and Albert Lokonga.

I think this is a terrific deal for Arsenal as Odegaard is a huge talent who is the exact profile of player we should be signing. The reported £34m fee is a bargain for a player of his potential so I’m delighted we’ve got a deal in place.

We’d need to have Odegaard registered by midday on Friday for him to be available to face Chelsea. Let’s hope the remaining formalities go smoothly.
