[Player ratings] Burnley 0-1 Arsenal: Gabriel & Odegaard shine, Smith Rowe struggles
Arsenal dug deep to secure a vital 1-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor this afternoon.
We broke the deadlock midway through the first half when Martin Odegaard fired home a wonderful free-kick from 25 yards after Bukayo Saka was brought down outside the area.
Burnley thought they had a penalty in the 70th minute after Aaron Ramsdale was adjudged to have fouled Vydra following a sloppy back-pass by Ben White. However, after checking the pitch-side monitor, referee Anthony Taylor rightly changed his mind as Ramsdale got a touch on the ball.
Both teams struggled to create many clear cut chances but Arsenal held out to secure an important 1-0 win.
Here are my ratings:
Ramsdale 7.5/10 | Another impressive display. Commanded his box well, made a couple of decent saves and claimed a number of high balls. A tad fortunate to get a slight touch on the ball which convinced the ref to change his mind on the penalty, but Leno will do well to regain the No.1 shirt any time soon.
Tomiyasu 7.5/10 | Solid again at right-back. Gave nothing away defensively, was happy to get involved in the physical game and put himself about. Won 100% of his duels.
White 6/10 | Short back-pass put Ramsdale in trouble and we were lucky to get away with it without conceding a penalty. Did better than expected in the air [won 4/5 duels] and battled well.
Gabriel 8/10 | MOTM. Terrific all-round performance. Dominant against a physical Burnley attack and seemed to enjoy the battle. Great last ditch tackle to deny Barnes a shot on goal late in the first half.
Tierney 6.5/10 | A fairly quiet game going forward but did his bit defensively when called upon.
Partey 7.5/10 | Great to see him back in the line-up and was very good in the No.6 role. Passed the ball around, made some important tackles/blocks and fought well against the Burnley midfielders. Still not 100 percent fit so there’s more to come.
Odegaard 7.5/10 | Top performance from the Norwegian. Was our main creator and while Arsenal struggled to carve out many chances, Odegaard was the link man when we did go forward. Superb free-kick won the game.
Smith Rowe 5/10 | Disappointing afternoon. Couldn’t really influence the game at all before going off with a knock.
Saka 5.5/10 | Won the free kick which lead to the goal but it was a frustrating game for Arsenal’s star boy. Struggled to open up the Burnley defence.
Pepe 5.5/10 | Like Saka, this was a disappointing showing from Pepe. The game was a tight battle so it wasn’t really suited to the Ivorian.
Aubameyang 5.5/10 | Again, not the type of game Auba likes. He had very little room and couldn’t really get in the game.
Subs:
Lokonga 6/10 | Added some much-needed energy in midfield.
Tavares N/A | On too late
Maitland-Niles N/A | On too late
