Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle: Player ratings and video goals
Arsenal bounced back from last weekend’s disappointment at Anfield to ease past Newcastle United 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon.
We controlled the first half and should have opened the scoring when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was presented with an opportunity just a yard from goal. Somehow the Gabon hitman clipped the post and it remained 0-0 at the break.
Arsenal stepped things up in the second half and opened the scoring thanks to a lovely Bukayo Saka finish following a slick passing move. We doubled our lead and sealed all three points when Gabriel Martinelli volleyed home midway through the second period.
Here are my ratings:
Ramsdale 7.5/10 | Stunning save to tip a Shelvey effort onto the bar when it was still 0-0. Crucial save and another clean sheet in the bag.

Tomiyasu 7.5/10 | A wonderful pass to set up Martinelli for his goal and was solid as a rock defensively.
Gabriel 7/10 | Enjoyed his battle with Joelinton and came out on top. Dominant against a weak Newcastle side.
White 7/10 | A solid showing from White and made a few runs forward from the back. Could perhaps have released the ball quicker at times.
Tavares 7/10 | Arguably our biggest attacking threat for much of the game. Always involved down the left flank and set-up Saka for the opener. Great to see him bounce back from his Anfield horror show. Needs to stop shooting though!
Partey 6.5/10 | Average performance. Did the basics right and improved in the second half but we should expect much more from him. Partey should be dominating games like this.
Lokonga 7/10 | Much improved from his last outing. Saw plenty of the ball and kept Arsenal ticking.
The Star-Boy strikes again 🤩
Wonderful, quick passing move from Arsenal, lead by Saka and finished by Saka 👏

Saka 8/10 | Superb finish to open the scoring. Kept the Newcastle defence busy and was always a threat. Sad to see him limp off with a hip injury. Hopefully it isn’t serious.
Smith Rowe 6.5/10 | Worked hard as always and linked up well at times but could have done more against a limited Newcastle side.
Odegaard 6.5/10 | Went close with a fine free-kick midway through the first half and saw a good amount of the ball. Linked up play but just felt he played it too safe at times. Needs to be more bold with his passing.
Aubameyang 5/10 | Somehow managed to hit the post from a yard. Shocking miss and wasn’t his day at all.
How did he not score there!? 🤯

Subs:
Martinelli 7.5/10 | Stunning volley to make it 2-0 just minutes after coming on. Could also have grabbed himself a second late on.
Elneny 5/10 | On to see the game out.
Lacazette 5/10 | Had a couple of half chances but couldn’t make them count.
MARTINELLI THAT'S FANTASTIC! 🤯
