Arsenal still hoping to sign Bruno Guimaraes
According to Sky Sports News, Arsenal are still looking to seal a late swoop to sign Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes with a deal expected to cost at least £25m.
Mikel Arteta is in the market for reinforcements before the window closes on January 31st as the boss knows we need to strengthen if we’re to beat Tottenham and Manchester United to that all-important fourth place this season.
Midfield is an area we desperately need to add to as we’ve been left badly exposed in recent weeks so Arteta wants to bring in a top class player to compete with Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga.
Arsenal were strongly linked with a move for Bruno Guimaraes earlier in the month with widespread reports suggesting the Brazilian international was Arteta’s prime target.
The speculation died down with some suggesting a deal with Lyon would be too difficult to do mid-season so Arsenal appeared to turn their attention to trying to sign Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus.
However, negotiations with the Serie A giants have failed to reach a successful conclusion so Arsenal are still on the hunt for another central midfielder and Sky Sports claims we’ve still not given up hope of signing Guimaraes.
Deal will cost £25m
The media outlet says on the Sky Sports transfer centre that any potential deal would cost Arsenal at least £25.1m [€30m] but that sounds like an excellent deal for a player of Guimaraes’ quality.
Arsenal have long been linked with the 24-year-old having scouted him during his days with Atheltico Paranaense before he joined Lyon and he’s continued to impress during his time in Ligue 1.
I think he’d be a superb signing if we could pull it off before the window closes but Sky Sports says PSG, Man Utd and Tottenham are also keeping a close eye on the midfielder so we could still face stiff competition.
Guimaraes is currently away with the Brazil squad preparing for upcoming games against Ecuador and Paraguay – which could complicate things if Arsenal were able to agree a fee with Lyon.
Let’s see how things develop over the next few days but I’d be delighted if Arsenal could somehow seal a deal to sign the South American ace this month.
