Director confirms Arsenal have made contact for de Tomas

By on January 31, 2022

According to quotes cited by Fabrizio Romano, Espanyol director Jose Maria Duran has confirmed Arsenal have made contact to discuss a potential deal for £62.5m-rated striker Raul de Tomas.

Mikel Arteta is on the look out for another forward to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – who’s tipped to join Barcelona on loan after being axed from the squad in late November for a series of rules breaches.

Arsenal wasted much of the month chasing Dusan Vlahovic only to see the Serbian international join Juventus and we’ve been linked with a number of other strikers such as Alexander Isak and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

However, another name has been circulating in the media recently with some outlets claiming de Tomas is on Arsenal’s radar and it appears we’ve stepped-up our interest in the Spanish hitman.

Fabrizio Romano quotes Espanyol sporting director Jose Maria Duran as saying that Arsenal have been in contact to express an interest in signing de Tomas but the La Liga outfit were reluctant to even discuss a potential deal.

Duran says they have no intention of letting the 27-year-old striker leave this late in the transfer window and pointed to the fact he has a £62.5m [€75m] release clause in his contract.

Fair enough, Espanyol aren’t interested in negotiating a deal with Arsenal to sell de Tomas, however, there’s not much they can do to stop him leaving if we decided to trigger his release clause. That’s very unlikely though as he’s not worth £62.5m.

De Tomas is enjoying an excellent campaign having scored 12 goals in 21 La Liga games so far this season but there are much better options out there for similar money. Isak being one of them.

It looks like Arsenal are getting rather desperate in their search for a new striker and it’s a shame it’s got to this point. Arteta needs more firepower if we’re to snatch fourth place and time is running out to rectify this issue.

Let’s see if Edu can pull something out the bag during the next few hours but it looks increasingly likely that Arsenal will end up without any January signings.
