Arsenal boss confirms Tomiyasu could miss Liverpool clash
Arsenal can tighten their grip on fourth place with a positive result against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.
We head into the game sitting fourth in the table after being Leicester City on Sunday and we can extend our one-point lead over Man Utd with a positive result against Liverpool.
As things stand, Arsenal are favourites with the bookmakers to finish fourth in the table with many Canada sports betting sites offering 2/1 odds that we’ll pip our rivals to that all-important Champions League spot. In order to build momentum and secure our place as favourites, Arsenal need a positive result against Liverpool.
Ahead of the game, Mikel Arteta has been speaking at his pre-match press conference today and the boss has provided an update on the fitness of Takehiro Tomiyasu.
The Japanese international hasn’t featured for Arsenal since the second leg of our Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool in late January due to niggling calf injuries.
The 23-year-old has been back in training recently but Arteta says they are being cautious not to rush Tomiyasu back too soon so the full-back remains a doubt for the visit of Liverpool tomorrow night.
Tomi will be assessed at training today before a final decision is made over his involvement so there is still a chance he could be involved against the Merseysiders.
told Arsenal.com:
“Tomi is the only one that’s still there in contention [to miss the game]”
“We have been trying to push him, but with the handbrake a little bit because we need to be careful as we don’t want to get another injury with him. We don’t know [if tomorrow is too soon]. Let’s see how he trains today.”
We’ll have to wait and see whether Tomiyasu is deemed fit enough to return against Liverpool but I think the smart money is on him missing out once again tomorrow.
Arsenal are clearly being cautious with his return to action as they don’t want to risk another set-back so I think we’ll see Cedric Soares continuing at right-back on Wednesday night.
Otherwise, Arsenal have no other fitness concerns to worry about so Arteta has almost a fully-fit squad to choose from against Jurgen Klopp’s side.
