Major injury boost for Arsenal ahead of West Ham trip
According to the Evening Standard, Arsenal have been handed a major injury boost with Bukayo Saka set to be available for Sunday’s trip to West Ham.
Saka was forced off midway through the second half of Arsenal’s 3-1 Premier League victory over Manchester United last weekend after appearing to pick up a knock.
Mikel Arteta suggested after the game that the 20-year-old was carrying an injury heading into the match which he had seemingly aggravated, so it looked as though Saka was facing a spell on the sidelines.
However, the Evening Standard are reporting that Saka’s withdrawal against United was just as a precaution and Arsenal are confident he’ll be fit to face West Ham at Upton Park on Sunday afternoon.
Saka has been training with the rest of the first team this week so his injury obviously isn’t serious. Unless he suffers a set-back over the coming days, the England winger should be in contention this weekend.
That news comes as a huge relief as the last thing Arsenal needed was to lose Saka as we battle to qualify for the Champions League. We’re back in fourth place – two points ahead of Tottenham – so we need Saka firing on all cylinders during the final five games.
Arteta can also call upon Takehiro Tomiyasu again after he made his long-awaited comeback last weekend. The Japan international came on for the final few minutes against United after recovering from a calf injury that’s kept him out since January.
The boss will no doubt be tempted to throw Tomiyasu straight back into the team on Sunday as he’s been sorely missed. However, it might be more sensible to give him 30 minutes in the second half rather than start him against West Ham.
In other team news, Kieran Tierney is obviously still out for Arsenal as he’s been ruled out for the rest of the season following knee surgery so Nuno Tavares could continue at left-back this weekend.
Thomas Partey has been seen running on a treadmill this week as he steps up his recovery from a thigh injury. The Evening Standard says Partey is working hard to get himself fit before the end of the season but there is no guarantee he’ll play again this campaign.
