According to The Times journalist Gary Jacobs, Arsenal have made a bid to sign Gabriel Jesus and the £50m-rated Manchester City striker wants to move to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Mikel Arteta is in the market for a new striker after allowing Alexandre Lacazette to join Lyon on a free transfer having run down his contract. No replacement was brought in for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after he joined Barcelona in January so we need at least one top class forward.

Jesus has been widely touted as Arteta’s prime target in the media over the past few months and Jacobs has claimed today that Arsenal have made a bid to sign the South American forward.

The Times journalist says City are demanding £50m for Jesus but Arsenal are ‘increasingly confident’ they are close to getting a deal agreed after formalising their interest.

There were fears we may miss out on the 25-year-old after failing to qualify for the Champions League and Jesus has been offered to the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham in recent weeks. However, Jacobs says the Brazilian international ‘wants to join Arsenal’ despite the fact we can only offer him Europa League football next season.

Jesus is about to enter the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and won’t sign an extension so £50m seems expensive. If a deal is to be agreed, I expect it will be closer to £40m.

That would present an excellent deal for a player of his quality. Jesus may not be the prolific goal-scorer may fans feel we need, but he’s got huge potential and is one of the most hard-working strikers around so he will be the ideal fit in Arteta’s system.

He provided 13 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for City last season and can play anywhere across the front three, so Jesus would be an excellent addition to the squad if we can get this deal done.

Obviously Arteta knows him well from their time together at City, and I’m sure that relationship is a key decision point if Jesus ends up joining Arsenal this summer.

Jacobs also says we have agreed a new contract with Eddie Nketiah – who’ll play second fiddle to Jesus next season – while Arsenal are also confident of signing Youri Tielemans from Leicester City.

So it looks like our main two signings could be Jesus and Tielemans. I’d be a happy Gooner if we bagged them, especially after missing out on the top four.
