Arsenal have announced the signing of Fabio Vieira after agreeing to pay Porto £34m for the highly-rated attacking midfielder.

Vieira emerged as a shock target last week when widespread media outlets broke news that Arsenal were closing in on a deal for the Portuguese under-21 international.

Porto released a statement on Friday morning confirming that a deal was in place to sell the 22-year-old to Arsenal for an initial £30m [€35m] with a further £4m [€5m] in additional add-ons.

Vieira travelled to London Colney to undergo his medical and the formalities have now been completed with Arsenal confirming on Arsenal.com this evening that the attacker has joined the club on a long-term contract.

Mikel Arteta is strengthening his squad after we secured a return to Europe next season so we need to add a lot more quality to our ranks if we’re to cope with the extra games.

The boss has spoken out after securing Vieira’s signature to say he’s excited to have landed such a ‘special talent’ and he believes the ‘versatile’ attacker will bring some creativity to the team.

Arsenal told Arsenal.com:

”I am very excited that we have identified and signed such a special talent. Fabio is a very creative player that will bring high quality and versatility to our attacking play. We welcome Fabio and his family to our club and are looking forward to starting work with him ahead of the new season.”

Arsenal’s technical director Edu is believed to have played an important role in signing Vieira and the former midfielder has been pictured with our latest signing as he put pen-to-paper on his contract. Edu also showed Vieira around London Colney.

The youngster is mainly a central attacking midfielder so he’s going to compete with the likes of Martin Odegaard and Emile Smith Rowe for a starting spot. However, he’s also able to play in a No.8 role or out wide so he’ll give Arteta plenty of options.

Vieira has forged a reputation as one of the best young talents in Portuguese football. He provided 6 goals and 14 assists last season, despite starting just 15 games, so he’s certainly going to bring some much needed creativity to Arsenal.

He becomes our third major signing of the summer with Vieira following goalkeeper Mat Turner and winger Marquinhos in joining Arsenal.
