Arsenal announce signing of Matt Turner
Arsenal have confirmed on Arsenal.com that goalkeeper Matt Turner has joined the club on a long-term contract from New England Revolution.
Mikel Arteta was in the market for a new goalkeeper after it became clear that Bernd Leno wanted to leave after losing the first team shirt to Aaron Ramsdale early last season.
Turner emerged as something of a surprise target in January and a deal was swiftly agreed following negotiations with New England Revolution.
The MLS outfit released a statement in February confirming a deal was in place for Turner to join Arsenal in the summer and Turner arrived in London late last week to undergo his medical.
The formalities have now been completed as Arsenal have confirmed Turner has joined the club on a long-term contract and will wear the No.30 shirt next season.
Arteta told the clubs website that the 28-year-old will give us ‘added strength’ next season and said he looked forward to working with the shot-stopper:
“Matt is an experienced goalkeeper who will bring high quality to our squad. He has shown with his performances in recent years in both the MLS and at international level with the United States that he is a goalkeeper who will give us added strength going into next season. We welcome Matt and his family to the club and we look forward to working together in the years to come.”
The Evening Standard says Arsenal have paid £5.5m for Turner but the deal could rise to £7.5m including add-ons.
Turner was voted as the best goalkeeper in the MLS last year and has racked up 18 caps for the US national team, so he should be a solid back-up for Ramsdale.
The goalkeeper becomes Arsenal’s third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Marquinhos and Fabio Vieira. But he won’t be the last addition as Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Gabriel Jesus from Man City while the likes of Raphinha, Lisandro Martinez and Youri Tielemans continue to be linked.
