Arsenal to submit fresh offer for Lisandro Martinez
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal will submit an improved offer to sign Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez as we look to beat Manchester United to his signature.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is trying to strengthen his defensive options this summer ahead of the new season. We’ll be back in the Europa League so the Spaniard knows we need a much deeper squad to cope with all the extra games.
Martinez emerged as a prime target last month and after seeing two lower offers rejected, Arsenal tested Ajax’s resolve with a third offer worth around £38m – as per the Daily Mail.
However, we aren’t the only club showing a keen interest as the newspaper says Man Utd matched our £38m bid last Friday and promised to pay Ajax more money up front. Erik ten Hag obviously knows Martinez well from their time together at Ajax, and he’s now hoping for a reunion at Old Trafford.
United’s interest has pushed Arsenal back into action and the Daily Mail says we will now go back to Ajax with an improved offer to try and trump the Manchester outfit to Martinez’s signature.
The report says Ajax value him at nearer £43m and the Dutch giants are under no pressure to sell so Arsenal [and United] may have to dig a little deeper if we want to get a deal agreed.
The 24-year-old won the Ajax Player of the Season last year having starred at centre-back but he’s also comfortable playing at left-back or as a defensive midfielder. No doubt his versatility is viewed as a huge asset by Arteta as he can offer competition in several positions.
The Argentinean international is only 5ft 9in so he’s very small for a centre-back, but he’s actually got an impressive record in the air due to his excellent leap and is superb on the ball.
Martinez wants to come to the Premier League and is open to joining Arsenal or Man Utd, so it’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out.
Arteta clearly wants him and feels he’d be a good fit at Arsenal, so let’s hope we manage to beat United to his signature…
