3 signings that can make Arsenal challengers again
Mikel Arteta is building an exciting young squad at the Emirates Stadium but Arsenal are still some way off competing at the very top level.
Having missed out on the top four by just two points last season, Arsenal have signed Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira, Marquinhos and Matt Turner to try and close the gap on those above them in the table.
However, the bookmakers still see Arsenal as outsiders for the Premier League title and even the top four next season. Sites such as https://www.xn--pgbn1dpl.net/ price Manchester City as the 4/7 favourites to retain their title, while Arsenal are regarded as distant 50/1 outsiders.
The betting markets even predict the Gunners to miss out on Champions League qualification again with Arsenal priced as the 7/4 sixth-favourites to claim a top four finish this coming campaign. City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Man Utd are all tipped to finish above the north Londoners.
So it seems Arteta still has to strengthen even further in order to close the gap. Here are three signings the Gunners should make to turn them into challengers again.
Lisandro Martinez
The Ajax star has forged a reputation as one of the best defenders in Dutch football and Arteta is desperately trying to lure him to the Emirates. Arsenal face stiff competition from Man Utd but Martinez would be the idea addition to Arteta’s squad if they can win the race.
The South American is comfortable playing at centre-back so would provide competition to Gabriel but he’s also able to play left-back which means he’ll be top class cover for Kieran Tierney.
N’Golo Kante
The world class defensive midfielder has been linked with a move to Arsenal recently and he’d be a sensational signing if they could pull it off. Kante endured a mixed campaign last season and has just one year left on his contract. It appears Thomas Tuchel may be open to cashing-in and Kante would be a terrific signing if Arsenal could agree a deal with Chelsea.
Marco Asensio
Arteta needs more creativity in attack and Asensio has been identified as a target. The Spanish international is looking to leave Real Madrid after failing to hold down a first team place under Carlo Ancelotti. Asensio has just one year left on his deal so could be available for as little as £25m, which would be a bargain for a player of his quality.
The 26-year-old can play on either wing or through the middle as an attacking midfielder, so he’d give Arteta a versatile option in the final third. Asensio also has plenty of experience at the top level, so he’d be an excellent addition to the Arsenal squad.
If the Gunners could sign Martinez, Kante and Asensio they would have a well-balanced and talented squad which would have the potential to compete with the very best.
