Arsenal can finally sign Youri Tielemans from Leicester – opinion
Arsenal entered the transfer window with the need of addressing attack, midfield and left-back issues this summer.
Following Alexandre Lacazette’s departure, the north London club needed a new striker and they signed Gabriel Jesus and addressed the attacking department.
On the other hand, Mikel Arteta’s side have struggled with their left-back issue due to Kieran Tierney’s persistent injury problems. They signed Nuno Tavares last summer to deputise for the Scotsman, however, the 22-year-old has struggled to find his feet in the Premier League. So, they have signed Oleksandr Zinchenko, loaning the Portuguese out to Olympique Marseille.
Meanwhile, The Gunners found it difficult to cope with the Premier League’s high demands towards the business end of the last season due to the lack of squad depth in midfield. Following Thomas Partey’s injury last term, Mikel Arteta’s side struggled to showcase their best and missed out on an opportunity to qualify for the Champions League. And having qualified for the Europa League this term, it will be an even more gruelling season for the north London club.
Partey and Granit Xhaka are the only regular midfield starters for Mikel Arteta and after that, he has Mohamed Elneny at his disposal who has showcased his limitations during his time at the Emirates Stadium and Sambi Lokonga needs time to develop.
So, Arsenal are in need of another midfielder this summer and Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans has widely been touted as Arteta’s prime target.
Move very possible:
As per Ben Jacobs, although Arsenal haven’t made any concrete approach to sign the Foxes’ midfielder this summer, a deal can still be done before the end of the transfer window.
The journalist further claimed that Brendan Rodgers’ side are expecting that an offer for the Belgian midfielder will arrive very soon and they would sell their star man if they get a fee of around £30m.
Meanwhile, with the north London club set to cash in on Lucas Torreira – who has accepted to join Galatasaray as per Fabrizio Romano – I think they will now finally make a move for Tielemans.
Signing the 25-year-old will be a shrewd decision as he will be a Premier League proven midfielder and the mentioned fee will be an absolute bargain for a player of his quality.
Granit Xhaka has struggled with his disciplinary issue throughout his time at the Emirates Stadium, therefore, the Belgian could establish himself as a regular starter in no time and will also bring composure to the Arsenal midfield.
Fans have waited patiently for the club to launch a formal move for Tielemans but he would be worth the wait and I think he’d be the final piece in Arteta’s jigsaw.
