Arsenal 4-2 Leicester: Jesus & Martinelli star for rampant Gunners
Arsenal made it two wins from two games thanks to a dominant 4-2 victory over Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium with Gabriel Jesus scoring twice.
We started strongly again and opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Jesus wasted no time to score his first competitive goal at home as the Brazilian curled home a wonderful effort into the top far corner.
Arsenal made it 2-0 just over 10 minutes later and it was Jesus again who got on the scoresheet as he headed home from close-range following a 35th minute corner to make it 2-0 to the Gunners.
Leicester pulled one back shortly after half-time and it was an unfortunate own goal from William Saliba who gifted them a way back into the game. However, Arsenal responded immediately and resorted their 2-goal cushion less than 2 minutes later as Granit Xhaka made it 3-1 after being teed-up by Jesus.
Leicester got another goal back in the 74th minute when James Maddition fired through Aaron Ramsdale’s legs from a tight angle, but once again Arsenal hit back straight away with Gabriel Martinelli making it 4-2 with a low left-footed drive from outside the box.
Here are my player ratings:
Ramsdale 5/10 | Will have been disappointed with the Maddison goal. Looked a little shaky today.
White 7/10 | Another solid outing at right-back but was replaced in the second half after picking up a knock. Hopefully it’s not serious.
Saliba 7/10 | Unlucky with his own goal and he was otherwise rock solid again. Dealt the Vardy well and was calm in possession.
Gabriel 7/10 | Not trouble for the Brazilian today. Looked comfortable alongside Saliba and covered for Zinchenko when he went forward.
Zinchenko 7.5/10 | Caught out a little for the Maddison goal but was otherwise excellent. Always involved in the build-up and so good on the ball. Such as important part of Arteta’s system as he drifts into midfield when Arsenal are in possession.
Partey 7/10 | Bossed the midfield and played a key role in instigating attacks with some incisive forward balls. Almost got himself on the scoresheet too.
Xhaka 8.5/10 | Excellent performance. Played as a box-to-box midfielder and showed he can be a threat in that role. Almost opened the scoring after hitting the post with a far post header, set up Jesus for his first then made it 3-1. Top all-round display.
Saka 7/10 | Was always a threat when he was on the ball but was simply overshadowed by his attacking team mates.
Odegaard 7/10 | Always involved with some intricate moves and dictated the play at times. Showed off some lovely touches.
Martinelli 9/10 | Outstanding. The youngster was unplayable at times, and was involved in everything. Worked his socks off to regain possession, was a nightmare for the Leicester defence and score a lovely goal.
Jesus 9/10 | MOTM. What a home debut! Simply outstanding. Stunning finish to open the scoring and showed his poachers instinct to make it 2-0 with a close range header. He also grabbed two assists and had 7 shots on goal, so he could perhaps have secured his hat-trick on another day. A huge upgrade on Lacazette and he’s going to be a star for Arsenal.
Subs:
Tomiyasu 6/10 | Great to see him back.
Tierney 6.5/10 | Looked solid after replacing Zinchenko for the last 15 minutes.
Nketiah 7/10 | Looked lively and saw a good shot well saved late on.
Smith Rowe 6.5/10 | Also nice to see him back on the pitch.
