Journalist reveals Lucas Paqueta is Arsenal’s priority target
Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta is Arsenal’s technical director Edu Gasper’s priority target to strengthen the midfield, as per the transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri (via Football.london).
Despite securing five major signings this summer, the Gunners appear to be still active in the market to add more options to their squad.
Earlier Fabrizio Romano reported that Mikel Arteta’s side are keen on adding more firepower to their squad within the remaining few weeks of the transfer window and Leicester City midfielder Tielemans is at the top of their list to strengthen the middle of the park.
However, the recent report by Sacha Tavolieri (via Football.london) is completely contrary to what Romano said previously. Writing on Twitter, Tavolieri has claimed that Lucas Paqueta is Arsenal’s technical director Edu’s primary target to bolster their midfield department, rather than Youri Tielemans. The Gunners have shown interest in the Belgian midfielder this summer, however, he is not the priority for the north London club.
Meanwhile, the journalist also claims that Arsenal aren’t expected to make a move for Paqueta this summer and they may wait until the winter window for the Brazilian international.
Paqueta to Arsenal
Speaking on Twitter, Tavolieri said:
“My feeling is that #Arsenal will wait the winter for trying to get Lucas Paqueta (who’s the real priority of Edu Gaspar in the midfield) as there is no real need at this position for the moment. So Youri is interesting for #AFC, but not priority.”
Lucas Paqueta would be a very good addition to the Arsenal squad, especially if they could snap him up for a reported cut-price fee of around £34m this summer.
However, The 24-year-old likes to play in the attacking midfield position and having already got Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe and the new signing Fabio Viera in his squad, Arteta doesn’t need more attack-minded midfielders.
So, Tielemans would be a perfect acquisition for Arsenal. The Spanish boss currently has Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka at his disposal for the central midfield position. Apart from that, Sambi Lokonga and Mohamed Elneny are the backups to the Ghanaian and the Swiss midfielders.
While Lokonga is still young and needs time to develop, Elneny has failed to impress the boss and has struggled to find regular first-team football at the Emirates Stadium.
Therefore, I think Tielemans would be a better fit for Arsenal over Lucas Paqueta, given what they are missing in the squad right now.
