Ian Wright provides his opinion on Arsenal’s disallowed goal against Man Utd
Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright has expressed his verdict on Gabriel Martinelli’s disallowed goal against Manchester United.
Following an impressive start to their Premier League campaign, the Gunners have now suffered their first setback of this season. Despite enduring a defeat against Man Utd on Sunday, the north London club remain at the top of the league, one point ahead of Man City.
Mikel Arteta’s side found themselves trailing against the Old Trafford outfit at the interval before Bukayo Saka equalized around the hour mark. However, Marcus Rashford’s two quickfire goals in the second half ended Arsenal’s hope of keeping their winning streak intact.
Meanwhile, Arsenal had opened the account early in this game thanks to the contribution from Martinelli, however, VAR disallowed the goal due to a foul in the build up.
Speaking on Match of the Day 2 on BBC One, Wright has said that after seeing the incident, he believed the officials would give that a foul in today’s day and age.
Wright’s verdict on Arsenal’s disallowed goal
Wright said:
“In this day, that’s a foul. When I saw that, they are going to give that even though they had a complete nightmare yesterday, VAR, I couldn’t see them not giving that.”
Although Arsenal lost the game against Manchester United, they displayed a promising performance on Sunday. Arteta’s side dominated the game for most of the time but were undone by two quick counter-attacks in the second half.
So, the Gunners shouldn’t dwell on this defeat too much and should move on as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, the biggest positive of this game was that Saka has now finally broken his duck and the Emirates faithful will be hoping that he can kick on now.
Following Sunday’s game, Arsenal will now have to shift their focus onto the Europa League as they travel to Switzerland to meet FC Zurich on Thursday night. So, the north London club will be looking to bounce back immediately in midweek.
