Merson makes a bold Arsenal prediction, injury to Jesus would be problematic
Ex-Arsenal forward Paul Merson has predicted that Arsenal will finish this campaign ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, however, he thinks if Gabriel Jesus gets injured then that would be a huge problem for his former club.
The Gunners have enjoyed a great start to this season as they are currently at the top of the Premier League table with 15 points for six games, one point ahead of second-placed Manchester City. Arteta’s side have also commenced their Europa League campaign with a 2-1 win against FC Zurich in the opening group game.
Writing on SportsKeeda, Merson said last week that Arsenal will secure their place in the top four this season along with Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham.
Meanwhile, now writing on the same outlet, the former forward has predicted that Arsenal will conclude this term ahead of arch-rival Spurs and Man United as well as finishing in the Champions League positions.
Merson also states that although he thinks Arsenal will end this term above their city rival and the Red Devils, things might change between now and the end of this season, and should Jesus pick up an injury then that would create a ‘massive problem’ for the Gunners. Eddie Nketiah could come in and try to fill that void, but, it would be a huge ask from the youngster to score goals every week.
Merson makes Arsenal prediction
Merson said:
“I think Arsenal will make it ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, but a lot could change between now and the end of the season.
“If Gabriel Jesus gets injured, they have massive problems. Eddie Nketiah is a good lad, but playing and scoring every week is a different ball game. Arsenal are in a good position to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League and I hope they can make it count this time.”
Gabriel Jesus has taken no time to settle down in his new surroundings and has established himself as a key player for Mikel Arteta’s side. However, Nketiah has also looked sharp whenever he’s given the chance.
The Englishman showcased towards the business end of the last season that he can be productive in front of the goal and therefore, it can be expected that he has the qualities to deputise for the Brazilian forward when needed.
I think Arsenal have enough options in their centre-forward position, given Gabriel Martinelli can also play up front if needed. So, they don’t need to worry about their depth in the striker position for this season.
