Arsenal plotting January swoop for Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz
Arsenal are reportedly planning to reignite their interest in Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz in the January transfer window, according to the report by The Sun.
The 24-year-old joined the Villans back in 2019 from Manchester City for a fee of around £12m. The midfielder was a key player in the West Midlands club’s starting line-up until the last campaign, however, he has now lost his place in the first eleven this season following the summer arrival of Boubacar Kamara.
The South American has started only twice in the Premier League for Steven Gerrard’s side this term, scoring a solitary goal which came against Arsenal.
The Gunners were in pursuit of a new midfielder in the summer transfer window and Luiz emerged as a potential target during the business of the window. However, despite submitting two late offers on deadline day to sign the Brazilian, Mikel Arteta’s side could not manage to lure the Villans into selling.
The Sun now reports that Arteta is getting concerned about Thomas Partey’s persistent injury problems and want a ‘quality replacement’ for the Ghanaian.
The report further claims that Arsenal have identified Luiz as a perfect option to strengthen their midfield department and Villa could now be persuaded to sell the Brazilian in January, after their failed summer attempts, due to the fact that the player would be available for free next summer.
Douglas Luiz to Arsenal
The report also says that Mikel Arteta’s side believe a fee of around £15m should be enough to broker a deal for Luiz, given his contract with Aston Villa will remain only six months in January. The sum is significantly less than what the north London club offered in the summer, which was £23m.
Douglas Luiz would be a great acquisition for Arsenal. The midfielder is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for long-range passing and is also excellent in set-pieces. So, he would be an ideal addition to Arteta’s squad.
The north London club need to strengthen their defensive midfield position and the South American could be an apt option to play in the Spanish boss’ system.
So, it will be interesting to see what Arsenal decide about their midfield department in January, signing Luiz would be a shrewd decision and the mentioned £15m fee would be an absolute bargain for a player of his quality.
