Journalist confirms Arsenal’s interest in Lovro Majer
Arsenal have reportedly been keeping a close eye on Stade Rennais midfielder Lovro Majer, as per the transfer journalist Dean Jones.
The 24-years-old joined the Ligue 1 outfit from Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb for a fee of around £11m. The midfielder enjoyed a stellar debut campaign at Roazhon Park last season, scoring six goals and registering eight assists in 29 league appearances.
Earlier The Sun reported that the Gunners sent scouts to watch Majer in action for Croatia against Denmark and the midfielder was the match winner in that contest, scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory which helped Zlatko Dalic’s side to qualify for the Nations League finals.
During an interview with GiveMeSport, Dean Jones echoed what The Sun reported a few days ago and said Arsenal have been exploring the Ligue 1 market in recent times, and it’s true that the north London club sent scouts to monitor Majer.
The journalist praised the 24-years-old highly and also lauded the player’s excellent passing ability and his vision.
Arsenal monitoring Majer
Jones said:
“This[Ligue 1] is a market they[Arsenal] watch closely, and it is true that they’ve had him [Majer] scouted. When you look at his style of play, he’s got a great weight of pass, he loves demanding the ball, he can see passes that very few other players can.”
Arsenal were eyeing a move for a new midfielder throughout the summer window and after missing out on signing one before the deadline, they would likely be keen on adding more options to their engine room in January.
The Gunners tried to sign Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz on deadline day to bolster their midfield department, however, the Villans didn’t allow the departure of their star man. But, things could be different in January, given the midfielder’s current contract will expire at the end of this season and it appears that the player doesn’t have any intention of prolonging his future at Villa Park beyond this season. So, Steven Gerrard’s side might be forced to cash in on the Brazilian this winter in fear of losing him for free next summer.
Arsenal already have Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe and Fabio Vieira in their squad who can play in the advanced midfielder role, but they lack options in the defensive midfield position, especially after the injuries to Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey.
Although Majer can play in multiple positions in midfield, he is more of a number ten. Therefore, signing Douglas Luiz in January would be a better decision for Arsenal over the Croatian, given the South American is a defensive-minded midfielder by trait.
