[Ratings & Goals] Arsenal 3-2 Liverpool: Saka & Martinelli destroy Klopp’s Reds
Arsenal produced a superb performance to finally beat Liverpool 3-2 in a thriller at the Emirates Stadium this evening.
Arsenal started strongly and opened the scoring in the second minute when Gabriel Martinelli latched on to a lovely Martin Odegaard throughball to slot past Alisson Becker for 1-0.
Liverpool grew into the game and equalised in the 34th minute when Darwin Nunez fired past Aaron Ramsdale after being teed-up by Luis Diaz.
It looked like it would be all square at the break but Arsenal restored their advantage in extra time when Bukayo Saka tapped home from close range from a Martinelli pass following a superb break.
Liverpool once again hit back shortly after half time when Diogo Jota played in Roberto Firmino and the Brazilian slotted home into the far corner for 2-2.
However, Arsenal went ahead for a third time when Saka scored from the penalty spot after Gabriel was fouled in the area. The Gunners held on to secure a huge victory that sees us reclaim top spot in the table.
Here are the confirmed line-ups:
Ramsdale 6/10 | Great save to prevent a Saliba own goal and could do little for either of the goals.
White 7.5/10 | Another impressive performance at right-back. Solid at the back and was involved going forward.
Saliba 7.5/10 | Poor for the Liverpool second goal but was otherwise colossal once again. Dealt well with Nunez.
Gabriel 6/10 | Very sloppy for the Nunez goal as he got his positioning and feet all wrong. Did his bit to shut Liverpool out during the closing stages.
Tomiyasu 8/10 | Surprise starter at left-back but it proved a masterstroke by Arteta as he had Salah in his pocket. So much so the Egyptian was subbed.
Odegaard 7.5/10 | Superb pass to set-up Martinelli for the opener and was the link player once again. Missed a great chance to make it 3-1 shortly after half time.
Partey 7.5/10 | Struggled a bit in the first half when Liverpool pressed him but was excellent after the break when Arsenal dominated.
Xhaka 7.5/10 | Battled superbly against Henderson and Thiago. A proper leader on the pitch.
Saka 8.5/10 | Gave Tsimikas all sorts of problems and was a constant threat. Scored the vital second goal just before half time and kept his cool to score the winning penalty.
Jesus 8/10 | Another superb all-round performance. Worked hard for the team, pressed all over the pitch, was a threat in the box and won the penalty. Took a nasty elbow to the face but was able to continue.
Martinelli 9/10 | Outstanding. Lovely run and finish to open the scoring and set-up Saka for Arsenal’s second following a superb break. Terrorised Alexander-Arnold – who was hauled off at half-time. Developing into a top class player.
Subs:
Tierney 6/10 | Solid final 15 minutes.
Nketiah N/A| On too late
Vieira N/A | On too late
