Martinelli wants a huge salary hike to sign a new deal with Arsenal
Gabriel Martinelli has confirmed he wants to stay at Arsenal and sign a new long-term contract, although the attacker is demanding a huge salary hike, according to reports.
The 21-year-old has enjoyed a brilliant start to this new campaign for Mikel Arteta’s side, scoring four goals and notching up two assists in nine Premier League appearances. His MOTM display helped Arsenal reclaim top spot in the table with a 3-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday.
Martinelli has now confirmed talks are underway over a new deal and he wants to stay at the Emirates and sign a new contract, with the Brazilian youngster saying ‘I’m so happy’ to be at a ‘big club’ like Arsenal.
When quizzed about signing a new deal, Martinelli told reporters:
“Of course, I want to stay. We are talking. Let’s see what is going to happen, but I want to stay, of course.
“I think it’s my best season here at Arsenal. I’m so happy for this moment. I think Arsenal is a big club and we have a lot of good players. I think you guys can see from the outside our hunger and our mentality. We want to win every single game and I think everyone can see that.
The Daily Mail says ‘tying Martinelli down in a new long-term contract’ has become a priority for Arsenal and the 21-year-old is demanding a wage of around £200,000 per week to sign a new deal, which is almost three times more than what he is currently earning at the Emirates Stadium.
The report also says that if the Gunners agree on giving the youngster what he wants then the winger will become one of the highest earners in the club. Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey are earning a similar amount at the moment with Bukayo Saka edging closer to agreeing on a new deal with a financial package close to that sum.
The report further claims that Arsenal have already started negotiations with Martinelli’s representatives regarding a new deal, however, ‘an agreement is not close’. The Brazilian is happy in the English capital and wants to prolong his stay at the club. So, both parties are willing to take time before finding an agreement with the forward still having two years in his current contract and there is an option to extend the deal for one more year.
Martinelli wants to become one of the highest earners at Arsenal
Martinelli has already established himself as an integral part of Mikel Arteta’s system. Therefore, tying the youngster down in a new long-term deal – before the end of this season – will be a shrewd decision by the club’s hierarchy.
The Brazil international has already showcased his talent in the Premier League over the past few campaigns and the forward could attract interest from the other European rivals if Arsenal take too much time before offering him a new deal. So, the Gunners should secure the highly-rated forward’s future as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, after a brilliant victory over Liverpool last weekend, Arsenal will travel to Aspmyra Stadion to take on Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday night.
The Gunners are currently sitting at the top of their Group in the Europa League and they will be looking to keep their winning run going in order to finish the group stage at the top and avoid playing the playoffs.
