PSV could be forced to sell Arsenal target Cody Gakpo for cheap in January
Arsenal could reportedly sign PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo in a cut-price £24m deal during the January transfer window, as per Dutch outlet De Telegraaf.
The Gunners have continuously been linked with a move for a new winger ahead of the winter window, and the Netherlands international has been named as one of the targets along with Mykhaylo Mudryk, Yeremy Pino and Wilfried Zaha.
Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth is one of several journalists claiming that the Gunners have identified Gakpo as a target ahead of the January window.
According to the report by De Telegraaf, PSV aren’t in a position to play hardball for Gakpo in January and would be forced to accept an offer of at least £26m if it was put on the table by prospective suitors due to their financial problems.
The 23-year-old is currently valued at around £32m by the Transfermarkt and he still has almost four years left in his current contract, so, if this report is accurate then Arsenal would get a top-talent in a bargain deal if the north London club were to agree a £26m fee this winter.
Gakpo to Arsenal
A report emerged this week claiming that Mikel Arteta would be backed with £50m to sign his targets in January and the Spanish boss appears to be keen on bolstering the midfield department as well as the flanks.
Gakpo would be an ideal acquisition for Arsenal to strengthen their wings, given he can play anywhere across the front line. On top of that, if the Gunners can manage to purchase him for the reported £26m fee then there would be funds left over to sign a midfielder.
The other target Mudryk would be very expensive as Shakhtar Donetsk’s sporting director Carlo Nicolini has confirmed recently that they wouldn’t entertain any offer less than £87m for their star man, while Pino wouldn’t come cheap either.
Therefore, I think Gakpo would be a very good signing for Arsenal as he’s still young and showing the potential to become a world-class winger in the future. So, if the Dutchman really is available for just £26m, then Arteta’s side shouldn’t give up on the opportunity and must go all out to broker a deal for this winter.
