Rodrigo Becao

Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a move for Udinese defender Rodrigo Becao, as per the Italian outlet Tutto Udinese.

The 26-year-old joined the Serie A club back in 2019 from Brazilian side Bahia for a fee of around £2m and since joining the Dacia Arena the defender has established himself as a key member of the first-team squad. The Bianconeri kicked off this season brilliantly and Becao was one of the catalysts of that stellar start, helping his team to accumulate 21 points from the first 10 league encounters.

However, he has been out injured since early October and Andrea Sottil’s side have failed to win in any of the last six matches in all competitions during the defender’s absence.

According to the report by Tutto Udinese, Becao’s current contract is set to expire in 18 months’ time and the Italian club have already offered a new deal to him with a salary hike. However, Udinese’s proposed financial package didn’t match the Brazilian’s demand and as a consequence of that, the negotiations have stalled.

The report further states that if the two parties can not reach an agreement anytime soon then Sottil’s side might cash in on their star man in January in order to make the best possible profit from the South American’s sale.

Becao to Arsenal

The report also says that Arsenal are keen on taking advantage of Becao’s current situation and are willing to offer a fee of around £13m to sign the South American. However, Mikel Arteta’s side will have to overcome the challenges of fellow Premier League clubs Everton and Tottenham Hotspur as well as Serie A giants AC Milan in order to get this deal over the line.

Rodrigo Becao could be an interesting acquisition for Arsenal. The defender standing at 191 cm, is quick, strong, good in the air and excellent in defending, however, he lacks precision with possession. So, he might struggle to fit in Mikel Arteta’s system, given the Spaniard likes defenders who are comfortable with the ball and can play out from the back.

Arsenal don’t need more right-footed centre-defenders having already got William Saliba, Ben White and Rob Holding at their disposal while Takehiro Tomiyasu can also play in that position if needed.

Arteta likes to deploy left-footed defenders in the left-centre-back position and he currently only has Gabriel Magalhaes at his disposal to play in that role. Therefore, if Arsenal were to make a move for a new defender then signing a left-footed one would be a wiser decision.

It will be interesting to see whether the Emirates outfit go for Becao in this January transfer window, but I don’t think the 26-year-old would the right addition to the Gunners’ squad at this time.
