Memphis Depay

Arsenal have received a big boost in pursuit of Barcelona star Memphis Depay as the forward is reportedly set to be available for a bargain £1.7m fee this January, as per the Spanish outlet Sport.

Mikel Arteta’s side have recently suffered a huge injury setback as their key starter Gabriel Jesus has sustained a lengthy knee issue during international duty with Brazil at the ongoing Qatar World Cup.

The Brazilian is now set to be sidelined for the next three months and Arteta is left with Eddie Nketiah at his disposal as the only senior centre-forward option.

Therefore, all of a sudden, Gunners fans have been calling for the club to sign another striker in the upcoming January transfer window.

A previous report claimed that Depay is eager to move away from Barcelona this winter after being frustrated with his role at Camp Nou and Arsenal are one of the Premier League clubs who are showing interest in signing the forward.

Meanwhile, according to the report by Sport, Arsenal target Depay – whose current contract is set to expire at the end of this term – could now be allowed to leave Barcelona for a bargain £1.7m fee this January. However, the north London club are set to face competition from Serie A giants AS Roma and Premier League rival Manchester United to sign the Netherlands international.

Although Depay could be a useful replacement for Gabriel Jesus, the Dutchman has showcased over the years that he lacks consistency and therefore, he might not be the ideal option to replace the Brazilian. However, the Barcelona man would be the best possible choice out there at the moment for the north London club to bolster the attack at the reported £1.7m price.

It appears Arsenal are looking to strengthen multiple areas in this winter window and adding more firepower in one of the key positions for the reported sum would help Arteta save his transfer budget and acquire other targets.

So, it will be interesting to see whether Arsenal will make a move for Depay this winter. Although the Dutchman won’t be the best possible replacement for Jesus, the 28-year-old would be a very good short-term solution for the Emirates outfit.
