Arsenal open talks to sign Leicester star Youri Tielemans
Arsenal have reportedly opened negotiations to sign Youri Tielemans and the Leicester City midfielder is “very close” to agreeing the move, as per the transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri.
The 25-year-old is set to enter the final six months of his current contract and the midfielder is looking unlikely to sign an extension at the King Power Stadium.
The Gunners were heavily linked with a move for the Belgium international during the last transfer window, however, the north London club didn’t formalise their interest in signing him.
Fabrizio Romano earlier reported that Mikel Arteta’s side remain interested in signing Tielemans and the Belgian’s name is on the Spanish boss’ wishlist to strengthen the engine room in January.
However, during an interview with Unibet Belgium, Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri claimed that Arsenal have started negotiations to lure Tielemans at the Emirates Stadium. Tavolieri further suggests that the player is “very close” to joining Arsenal on what appears to be a free transfer at the end of the season.
Youri Tielemans to Arsenal
Sacha Tavolieri said:
“Youri Tielemans is very close to signing for Arsenal for next season. In any case, discussions are underway.”
It appears Arsenal are looking to sign Tielemans next summer when he will be available for free. Previously it was reported that the north London club are exploring the possibility of strengthening the engine room this January to boost their title charge after the new year.
However, Arteta’s side are seemingly prioritising bolstering their attack this January, following Gabriel Jesus’ injury, before adding more firepower in the other positions. Mykhaylo Mudryk has emerged as a potential target to strengthen the frontline and Arsenal have already submitted an official proposal of around £57m, including bonuses.
But, the Gunners’ proposal is somewhat around £30m less than Shakhtar Donetsk’s valuation. So, it appears a big chunk of the north London club’s January transfer budget will be spent to bolster the attacking department. Therefore, Arsenal may not be able to afford to strengthen multiple areas this January.
Nevertheless, signing Tielemans – who is valued at around £35m by Transfermarkt – for free would be a great piece of business by the Emirates outfit. So, it will be fascinating to see whether Arsenal will be able to acquire the highly-rated midfielder’s services next summer without spending any transfer fee.
