Arsenal eyeing swoop for Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez
Arsenal have reportedly rekindled their interest in signing Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez in the summer window, as per the Football Insider.
The Argentine has established himself as one of the best attackers in Italian football since joining the Nerazzurri back in 2018, helping his club in winning the Scudetto, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana during this period.
The 25-year-old has been continuing his impressive form this season, scoring 12 goals and notching up three assists in 22 Serie A appearances.
According to the report by Football Insider, despite Eddie Nketiah impressing during Gabriel Jesus’ injury absence, Arsenal are still looking to sign a new centre-forward next summer and have set their sight on Martinez.
The report further claims that Inter are struggling with financial difficulties and are looking to balance the books by cashing in on some of their biggest assets next summer. The Argentine is one of the players who could be shown the exit door and they want up to £80m for the 25-year-old – who still has three and a half years left in his current contract.
Martinez to Arsenal
The report also says that Mikel Arteta’s side are looking to take advantage of this situation and purchase the South American. Arsenal have already held talks with the player’s representatives over a possible move at the end of this season and the forward is open to the prospect of moving to the Emirates Stadium.
It is a big surprise that the north London club are eyeing a move for a new striker to support Jesus as Nketiah has proven his worth in recent months while he’s been filling in up front.
So, I believe, having already got two very good centre-forwards in the squad, Folarin Balogun impressing out on loan and new signing Leandro Trossard capable of playing up front, Arsenal don’t need to invest the reported £80m fee to sign Martinez.
Arsenal are reportedly looking to strengthen their engine room in the summer and are keen on signing both Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo. The Premier League duo are expected to cost around £150m combined as it has been reported that Rice could be available for £70m and Brighton & Hove Albion want £80m to sell their star at the end of this season.
Therefore, rather than splashing £80m to sign a new striker, saving the money to fund both Rice and Caicedo’s transfers would be a wiser decision by Arsenal.
