Arsenal plotting summer swoop for Chelsea star Sterling
Arsenal are reportedly plotting a surprise summer swoop for Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling, as per 90min.
The 28-year-old joined the Blues last summer from Manchester City for a fee of around £45m, though has struggled to showcase his best this season, scoring four goals and notching up two assists in 18 Premier League appearances.
According to the report by 90min, Chelsea are looking to trim down their squad at the end of this season and are open to cashing in on some of the underperforming stars and Sterling could be at risk.
Meanwhile, the report claims that Arsenal are seeking to strengthen their squad with the view of competing in the Champions League next season. Mikel Arteta wants players who have experience playing in Europe’s elite club competition and has identified Sterling as an option to reinforce the attack.
Sterling to Arsenal
The report also claims that the Gunners’ boss is a big fan of Sterling due to the winger’s ability to play anywhere across the front line and therefore, Arsenal want to submit a bid to purchase the former Man City man if he becomes available at the end of this season.
David Ornstein has recently claimed that the Gunners’ are looking for reinforcements in several areas of their squad in the summer with the front line being one of them.
Sterling would be a very good acquisition and would certainly bolster the north London club’s attacking department if he were to move to the Emirates Stadium next summer. However, the forward – valued at around £62m by Transfermarkt – still has four and a half years left in his current contract.
So, the Blues are in no rush to sell in the summer and Arsenal would need to offer a big transfer fee to persuade Graham Potter’s side into letting the England international leave.
It is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal will be able to broker a deal for Sterling if they decide to formalise their interest in him at the end of this season.
