Arsenal are reportedly contemplating a move for PSV Eindhoven midfielder Xavi Simons in the upcoming summer window, as per the Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The 19-year-old came through the Barcelona academy before joining the Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain back in 2019. However, having failed to find regular game-time at the Parc des Princes, the midfielder moved away from the French capital at the beginning of this season in search of first-team football and signed for PSV.

The youngster has been enjoying a stellar debut campaign at the Philips Stadion this term, scoring 12 goals and registering six assists in 25 Eredivisie appearances.

According to the report by Fichajes, after impressing with Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side this season, Simons has caught the attention of big clubs around Europe with Arsenal among those registering their interest in the talented midfielder.

The report further claims that Mikel Arteta believes the Netherlands international possesses the potential to become a world-class player going forward and therefore, the Spanish boss has been keeping a close eye on the youngster’s development ahead of a potential summer move.

Simons to Arsenal

However, Fichajes claims that securing Simons’ service won’t be straightforward for the north London club as Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea are also eyeing a swoop for him.

The midfielder – valued at around £16m by Transfermarkt – still has four and a half years left in his current contract. So, PSV Eindhoven are in no rush to sell their star man next summer and Arsenal will have to submit a lucrative proposal to persuade the Dutch club to sell.

Arteta is seemingly keen on purchasing players who can play multiple positions and Simons would be an ideal option as he can be deployed anywhere across the attacking midfield positions.

The PSV man is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has the ability to create chances for the attackers, can wriggle past opposition defenders in tight areas and also has an eye for scoring goals.

So, Simons would certainly be a very good acquisition for Arsenal and would definitely strengthen the Gunners’ engine room if he were to move to the Emirates Stadium next summer.

However, it remains to be seen whether the north London club will make a concrete approach to sign the highly talented midfielder at the end of this season.
