Arsenal considering move for Leverkusen fullback Frimpong
Arsenal are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Bayer Leverkusen wingback Jeremie Frimpong in the summer, as per transfer insider Dean Jones.
It didn’t look like at the beginning of this season that the Gunners needed to strengthen their right-back position. However, following Takehiro Tomiyasu’s season-ending injury and his recent poor form has forced Mikel Arteta to think otherwise as Ben White – who is a centre-back by traits – is the only option the Spanish boss is currently left with to choose from between now and the end of this term.
The north London club have started to intensify their efforts to sign a new full-back ahead of the summer window as they have been linked with several options in recent times with Frimpong now emerging as a serious target.
Writing on GiveMeSport, Jones has said that Arsenal are plotting a swoop for Leverkusen full-back Frimpong to strengthen their right side of the defence for next season. But, along with the Dutchman, Kyle Walker-Peters and Ridle Baku are also on their radar.
Frimpong to Arsenal
However, the journalist claims that signing Frimpong won’t be straightforward for the north London club as Manchester United have been looking to lure the highly talented defender away from the BayArena.
The 22-year-old – valued at around £22m by Transfermarkt – still has more than two years left in his current contract so Xavi Alonso’s side aren’t in any rush to sell this summer. Therefore, Arsenal will have to submit a lucrative proposal to persuade the German club to sell.
Frimpong has been enjoying a brilliant campaign in the Bundesliga this season, scoring seven goals and registering six assists in 25 league appearances.
The defender is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has the ability to dribble past the opposition defenders in tight areas, can create chances for the attackers and also has an eye for scoring goals.
He possesses the necessary attributes to play in Arteta’s system so he would be an excellent signing for the north London club if they manage to get a deal over the line. However, it is going to be fascinating to see whether Arsenal decide to make a concrete approach to purchase the highly-rated defender at the end of this season.
