Arsenal in ‘consistent contact’ to sign Everton star Onana
Arsenal are reportedly laying the groundwork to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana this summer, as per Het Nieuwsblad.
The 21-year-old moved to Goodison Park at the beginning of this campaign from LOSC Lille in a £26m deal. The youngster has taken no time to settle down in his new surroundings and straightaway has been showing his talent in the English top-flight despite the Toffees’ recent struggles.
After impressing for Everton, the Belgian has been attracting a lot of attention from big Premier League clubs, including Arsenal. Onana was linked with a move to Emirates Stadium during the winter window, but the Gunners never formalised their interest so a deal never materialised. But, things could be different this time around.
Sports Witness cites and translates the print version of Het Nieuwsblad as saying that Onana is set to leave Everton at the end of this season and Arsenal are ‘closely’ following the 21-year-old’s situation with the intention of luring him to North London this summer.
The report further claims that Arsenal have been in a ‘consistent contact’ with the player’s representatives over a potential move and Sean Dyche’s side could demand at least £53m to let their star man leave. So, Arsenal will have to spend big to secure Onana’s signature.
Onana to Arsenal
The Everton star, standing at 6ft 4in tall, is a dynamic midfielder – who is strong, good in the air, technically sound and also has the ability to dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas. However, he lacks the playmaking attributes that Mikel Arteta wants from his deep-lying midfielder.
Onana would certainly bring intensity to the Gunners’ play if he were to move to the Emirates Stadium this summer. But, I think he isn’t the right option for Arteta’s possession-based style of football.
So, Arsenal would be better off exploring other options to strengthen the engine room this summer. However, Onana is still very young and has plenty of time on his side to sharpen up his playmaking ability. In addition, he will have the luxury to learn his traits under Thomas Partey’s tutelage if he were to join Arsenal.
Therefore, the Everton star could turn out to be an excellent signing for the North London club going forward if they opt to push forward and get a deal done at the end of this season.
