Arsenal keeping tabs on Wolfsburg defender Ridle Baku
Arsenal are reportedly keeping a close eye on VfL Wolfsburg defender Ridle Baku, as per the German outlet Sport Bild.
The 24-year-old has been enjoying a productive campaign in the German Bundesliga this season, scoring five goals and keeping six clean-sheets in 26 league appearances.
The German international’s impressive performances haven’t gone unnoticed as he has already caught the attention of several big clubs around Europe, including Arsenal.
Sport Witness cites and translates the print version of Sport Bild as saying that Arsenal are interested in signing Baku and they have been monitoring his development ahead of a potential summer move.
The report further claims that the North London club have been impressed by the full-back’s dynamism and his attacking output. So, Mikel Arteta’s side are contemplating making a swoop for Baku to strengthen their right side of the defence for next season.
Baku to Arsenal
However, the report says that securing the 24-year-old’s signature won’t be easy for Arsenal as RB Leipzig and Villarreal are also eyeing a move for him.
Baku – valued at around £11m by Transfermarkt – still has more than two years left in his current contract. So, Wolfsburg will be in no rush to let their star man leave this summer. But if a club of Arsenal’s stature decide to formalise their interest in signing the full-back then the German club will find it difficult to keep hold of him.
It was thought at the beginning of this season that Arsenal are well resourced in their right-back position. But, Takehiro Tomiyasu’s injury issues have left Mikel Arteta with Ben White as the only senior option to choose from at the moment.
So, the Japan international’s ever-increasing fitness problems have forced the Emirates club to explore options in the market to add depth to their right-back position.
Baku could be a shrewd signing to address that issue. The German is quick, technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, can create chances for the forward players and also has an eye for scoring goals.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal decide to make a concrete approach to sign Baku at the end of this season.
