Arsenal hold talks to sign Chelsea star Mason Mount
Arsenal have reportedly held ‘exploratory talks’ over a potential deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount this summer, as per The Telegraph.
It has widely been suggested that the Gunners are looking to strengthen their squad for next season and adding reinforcements to the midfield department is high on Mikel Arteta’s wishlist this summer.
Declan Rice has been mentioned as Arsenal’s primary target to beef up the engine room. However, West Ham have made it clear that they are not going to let their star man leave for anything less than the British transfer record – which is £106m.
It appears securing Rice’s signature will be a daunting task for the North London club so they are lining up alternative targets if they fail to purchase the West Ham star this summer.
Arsenal have been linked with several options over the last few weeks with Martin Zubimendi, Alexis Mac Allister and Ruben Neves being among them, however, Mount is now emerging as a serious target.
Mount to Arsenal
According to the report by The Telegraph, Arsenal have held ‘exploratory conversations’ regarding a potential swoop for Mount and they could opt to formalise their interest this summer.
However, the report says that purchasing the 24-year-old won’t be straightforward for the Gunners as Liverpool are also keen on acquiring the Chelsea star’s services.
Mount is set to enter the final year of his current contract this summer and hasn’t signed a new deal with the Blues yet. So, it is increasingly likely that he will move away from Stamford Bridge at the end of this season.
It has been suggested that if Mount doesn’t sign a new deal over the coming months then Chelsea could cash-in on him this summer should they receive an offer of around £70m.
So, Mount wouldn’t be a cheap option for Arsenal if they decide to make a move in the summer. However, the Englishman is an extremely talented player and has already showcased his qualities at the elite level over the last few years.
Therefore, Mount would be a great coup for Arsenal should they manage to secure his signature and beat Liverpool in this race at the end of this season.
