Arsenal’s 2022/2023 Premier League campaign turned out to be a disappointment after promising so much.
After sitting at the top of the standings for most of the season, the Gunners found themselves hanging onto the coattails of Manchester City in the race for the title in the last few weeks of the campaign.
The capitulation came right after they had been tagged as favourites by many of the sportsbooks like those listed on betting bonus comparison site, Bettingbonus.com.
In April, matches against Liverpool, Southampton, and West Ham saw them lose ground in the run-in to the title, allowing Manchester City to get in the Driver’s seat.
First off, Mikel Arteta’s men threw away a two-goal lead at Anfield, allowing Liverpool to claw back and manage a point at the end of hostilities. A similarly unimpressive outing against West Ham saw them share the spoils after going two goals up early in the match.
Fixtures against Southampton at the Emirates and Manchester City at the Etihad saw the Gunners claim one point from a possible six.
With those results, the former Premier League champions were banking on a City slip-up to claim their first Premier League title in nineteen years.
However, the 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton at the Emirates finally took their destinies out of their hands.
Now, winning the Premier League title this season seems like a pipe dream.
However, what is now turning out to be a disappointing end to the campaign, the Gunners have impressed, bar the occasional blip this season.
Beyond the disappointment of possibly not winning the title, there are positives from the current season.
Mikel Arteta has proved beyond reasonable doubt that his team can challenge for the title and they can only get better with quality additions to the squad.
Players will now believe that they are able to rub shoulders with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool – teams who have dominated the League in the last few years.
The average age of the squad is now significantly lower, there is increased competition for places in the team and most pundits are of the opinion that Arsenal is a few requirements away from being the front runners for the title next season.
The rear guard is much more stable now, there is more firepower upfront. The team has plundered 83 goals this season and a few more could still be added to the tally with a couple of games to play to wrap up the season.
As the plans for next season go into top gear, and the board expected to back the manager to get his summer targets, there is optimism around the club and the fan base that they could go the distance next season.
While some still doubt the current makeup of the team to mount a sustainable challenge next season, a vast majority of Pundits are backing Arsenal to go all the way next term.
While the jury is still out on the team’s ability to beat other contenders to the title, fans around the world can take solace in the fact that they will be featuring in the UEFA Champions League next season, after so many years of absence.
