Arsenal line up summer swoop for Leicester ace Maddison
Arsenal are reportedly looking to sign Leicester City midfielder James Maddison this summer, as per the Mirror.
The 26-year-old is set to enter the final year of his current contract and hasn’t signed a new deal with the Foxes yet. So, it is increasingly likely that the Englishman will move away from the King Power Stadium in the upcoming transfer window.
Several Premier League clubs such as Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are reportedly looking to take advantage of this situation and acquire his service during the off-season. And along with those, Arsenal have also registered their interest in signing Maddison in a cut-price deal in the summer.
According to the report by the Mirror, Arsenal are planning for a major squad overhaul at the end of this season and are prioritising revamping their engine room.
The report further claims that Mikel Arteta’s side are ready to cash-in on Emile Smith Rowe in the upcoming transfer window and if he were to leave the club then the Gunners will target a move for Maddison to replace the Hale End graduate.
Maddison to Arsenal
Leicester are currently languishing 18th in the league and their Premier League status for next season is in huge danger. So, if they fail to stay up in the English top-flight next season then they will be forced to sell Maddison – valued at around £48m by Transfermarkt – for cheap this summer. In that case, Arsenal will be handed a big opportunity to sign him for a bargain deal should they opt to formalise their interest.
Despite Leicester’s recent struggles, Maddison has enjoyed a productive campaign this term, scoring 10 goals and registering nine assists in 29 league appearances.
Maddison likes to play in the number ten role but he can also be deployed anywhere across the attacking midfield positions. He is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has the ability to create chances for the attackers, is excellent at taking set-pieces and also has an eye for scoring goals from distance.
The 26-year-old is an extremely talented player and possesses high potential. So, he would be a great signing for the North London club should they manage to land him this summer.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal decide to make a concrete approach to purchase Maddison if he eventually ends up leaving Leicester at the end of this season.
