Arsenal keen on signing Southampton star Romeo Lavia
Arsenal have reportedly been showing a genuine interest in signing Southampton star Romeo Lavia this summer, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Despite enjoying a stellar campaign, the Gunners failed to keep their momentum going during the business end of last season and as a consequence of that, they narrowly missed out on winning the Premier League title.
Following a disappointing end to last term, the North London club have seemingly decided to bolster their squad this summer in order to challenge on all fronts from the next campaign. Midfield is an area that Mikel Arteta has prioritised to reinforce and have identified Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo as primary targets.
However, although Arsenal have intensified their efforts to sign Rice and are currently the front-runner to secure his signature, they have fallen behind Chelsea in the race to purchase Caicedo. So, the Gunners have decided to shift focus to alternative targets and have now earmarked Lavia as a serious option.
Writing on Twitter, Romano has reported that Arsenal have been showing a ‘concrete and strong interest’ in signing Lavia this summer.
Lavia to Arsenal
The journalist further claims that Arteta’s side have an excellent relationship with the Belgian’s agent and they have already held talks with the player’s representatives over a potential summer move.
However, Romano says that securing Lavia’s signature won’t be easy for Arsenal as Man Utd and Chelsea have also been plotting a swoop for him.
Romano wrote:
“Arsenal have concrete and strong interest in Romeo Lavia. Relationship is excellent with his camp — talks already took place. Timing will be crucial as Chelsea remain interested. Man United appreciate Lavia but still not advancing.”
After failing to stay up in the Premier League, Southampton will be forced to sell some of their stars this summer and Lavia is one of the players – who is expected to leave during this transfer window.
It has been suggested that having signed the 19-year-old last summer, the Saints don’t want to let the Belgian leave for cheap and want a fee of around £45m to sell so, Arsenal will have to spend big to acquire his services.
Lavia has showcased glimpses of his talent during his debut campaign in the Premier League. So, he would be an excellent acquisition for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future if they manage to lure him to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
