Arsenal ‘getting closer’ to sign Jurrien Timber this summer
Arsenal are reportedly ‘getting closer’ to signing Jurrien Timber after submitting an improved bid worth around £40m, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The Gunners have prioritised strengthening their engine room this summer and along with that, they are also keen on reinforcing their backline. Mikel Arteta’s side have been linked with numerous defensive options over the last few months with Timber now emerging as the primary target.
Arsenal submitted an opening £30m proposal to sign the defender last week and it has been suggested that the North London club have already agreed on a five-year deal with the player.
However, Ajax rejected the Gunners’ first bid as they reportedly want £50m to sell the defender. But, it has been reported that there is optimism that a deal can be agreed upon for a compromised fee.
Now, writing on Twitter, Romano has said that Arsenal are ‘getting closer’ to signing Timber after submitting an improved bid worth around £39m-£41m[€45/48m]. So, it remains to be seen whether Ajax accept the Emirates club’s latest proposal or stay firm on their valuation.
Timber to Arsenal

“Arsenal are getting closer to signing Jurrien Timber after 2nd official bid submitted today. Understand value of the second proposal is close to €45/48m. Contract ready and agreed until 2028 as Timber has been clear: he loves Arsneal project and wants to join them.”
Arsenal have so far been extremely busy in this transfer window as after agreeing on a deal with Chelsea to sign Kai Havertz, Arteta’s side have been working to sign Declan Rice and Timber simultaneously.
So, this suggests that having narrowly missed out on winning the Premier League title last term, Arsenal are keen on bridging the gap with Manchester City and challenging on all fronts from next season by strengthening their squad in this transfer window.
Timber is an extremely talented player and possesses high potential so, he would be an excellent signing for Arsenal. However, given Timber is comfortable playing as a centre-back as well as a right-back, it remains to be seen in which position Arteta plans to use him if the defender eventually moves to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
