Arsenal agree deal in principle with Ajax to sign Timber
Jurrien Timber is set to undergo medical after Arsenal agree on a deal in principle with Ajax Amsterdam to sign the defender, as per the Dutch journalist Mike Verweij.
The Gunners have prioritised strengthening their engine room this summer and are closing in on a deal to sign Declan Rice for a record £105m fee after purchasing Kai Havertz from Chelsea. But, it has been suggested that Mikel Arteta is keen on bolstering the backline as well and Timber has emerged as the primary target.
The North London club initially submitted a £30m bid to sign the defender; however, Ajax turned down that proposal as they wanted £50m to let their star man leave this summer. But, it has been suggested that a deal can be agreed upon for a compromised fee.
Arteta’s side reportedly launched an improved £40m bid a few days ago to acquire the Netherlands international’s services. Now, writing on De Telegraaf, Verweij has reported that Arsenal have reached a verbal agreement with Ajax to sign the player and the structure of the deal is £36m guaranteed fee plus £4m in add-ons.
The journalist further claims that Timber is now set to undergo medical before the deal gets finalised so, it appears Arsenal are on the verge of making another signing this summer.
Reinforcements
It has previously been reported that Arsenal are planning to spend big in this transfer window to strengthen their squad in order to challenge on all fronts from next season and they have already showcased their spending spree during the early stages of this summer.
However, it has been suggested that the North London club won’t end their transfer business just yet as they are aiming to make two more signings after purchasing Havertz, Timber and Rice.
The engine room is an area that Arteta is keen on revamping after transfer-listing Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey. So, it has been reported that the Spanish boss wants to sign another midfielder after Rice and Havertz.
Romeo Lavia has been mentioned as a serious target and Fabrizio Romano previously reported that the Gunners have been working hard to lure him to the Emirates Stadium. So, it is going to be interesting to see how much Arsenal will eventually spend in this transfer window to bolster their squad.
